Census 2020

Help Shape Our Future

Census Day is April 1, 2020! The U.S. Constitution requires that every 10 years a census is taken of America’s population, including everyone living in the City of Lighthouse Point. In 2020, new technology will make it easier than ever to respond to the Census. For the first time, responses will be made online, by phone or by mail.

Invitations to participate in the 2020 Census will be mailed out beginning March 12, 2020. Depending on how likely your area is to respond online, you will receive either an invitation encouraging you to respond online or an invitation along with a paper questionnaire. Every household that hasn’t already responded will receive additional reminders and will eventually receive a paper questionnaire. For more information regarding 2020 Census Mailings please visit their website.

The U.S. Census is the federal government’s largest statistical agency that provides current facts and figures about America’s people, places, and economy.

The U.S. Constitution requires that each decade a count or census of America’s population be taken to determine how many representatives each state gets in Congress, and to help distribute more than $675 billion to states and communities every year for a variety of needs including new roads, schools and emergency services.

Completing the Census is mandatory, and by federal law, all responses to the U.S. Census Bureau are kept completely confidential. Answers can only be used to produce statistics - they cannot be used for law enforcement purposes or to determine personal eligibility for government benefits.
